Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Diana (master Harman Helveg).

Capture history: a Swedish merchant ship (snow, 110 or 150 tons, 12 men, 2 passengers) bound from Cadiz to Edentown [Edenton], North Carolina, laden with dry goods, salt, wine, tea; taken on 16 or 17 April 1778 at Ocracoke Bar, North Carolina by HMS Lizard (Thomas McKenzie [Mackenzie] commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from Spain to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-7:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of McKenzie v The snow Diana and her cargo, 29 April 1778 ;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master James Cranston lieutenant, 1 May 1778;
  • [CP 3-CP 4]: two depositions of Harman Helveg and Peter Poulet, British supercargo who threw papers overboard, 1 May 1778;
  • [CP 5]: letter from Poulet to McKenzie, 27 April 1778;
  • [CP 6]: petition of Poulet and James Ryan, one of the owners of the cargo, to the court, 4 May 1778;
  • [CP 7]: acknowledgement of Herman Helveg to the court, 22 May 1778.
