Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Commodore Hood of Falmouth (master Robert Richards).

Capture history: a English ship (100 tons, 11 and then 8 men) bound from Falmouth, Cornwall to Charleston, South Carolina, laden with beef, butter, flour, shoes, wines and other assorted goods; taken on 24 October 1780 in latitude 32°N, longitude 60°W by American privateer America , retaken on 30 October 1780 by HMS Hydra (Edward Garner commanding), and brought into Cork, Ireland.

Intended voyage: from England to British America.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-33) brought in by the prize master John Reid, acting lieutenant, Cork, 12 December 1780;
  • [CP 2]: depositions of John Sidgmond mariner of Falmouth, and Nathaniel Harris of Newburyport. Massachusetts, taken at Cork, 13 December 1780;
  • [CP 3]: standing interrogatories, commissioners' affidavit, Cork, 13 December 1780; and a copy of their commission, 13 July 1779;
  • [CP 4]: answer and claim of Edward James, insurance broker of London, and agent of Joseph and Samuel Tregelles of Falmouth, Cornwall, owners of the Commodore Hood, 14 March 1781.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-33: [all wanting; perhaps restored?]
