Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Commodore Galvez (master Matheo Madan).

Capture history: a Spanish merchant ship sailing under American colours (brigantine, 100 tons, 29 men) bound from Havana, Cuba to Cadiz, laden with sugar and hides; taken on 15 September 1782 in latitude 33°30'N, longitude 68°30'W by HMS Amphion (John Bazely commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to Spain.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers [numbered 1-4] brought in by the prize master James Rickey, 25 September 1782;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Bazely v The brig Commodore Galvez and her cargo, 25 September 1782 ;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Tomas Victor Suorea of Cadiz, 27 September 1782.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-4:-

  • SP 1: invoice of cargo;
  • SP 2-SP 3: bills of lading;
  • SP 4: invoice of cargo, including a request from Roberto Madan to buy 'grodetur negro' (black gros de Tours or grosgrain) as in the fabric sample, attached.
