British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.
Captured ship: Commit (commander John Shaw).
Capture history: an American privateer (sloop, 15 tons, 9 guns, 20 men) bound from Egg Harbor, New Jersey on a cruise; taken on 29 September 1778 off Barnegat, New Jersey by the loyalist privateer Hammond (Bridger Goodrich commanding), and brought into New York.
Intended voyage: a cruise from the United States.
Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-
- [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Benjamin Mallet, boatswain, 5 October 1778;
- [CP 2]: libel in Goodrich v The armed sloop Commit, 5 October 1778;
- [CP 3]: monition, 5 October 1778;
- [CP 4]: deposition of Thomas Pemberton, second lieutenant, of North Carolina, 13 October 1778;
- [CP 5]: deposition of John Shaw, commander, of Egg Harbor, 13 October 1778;
[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 26 October 1778].
