British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.
Captured ship: Chelsey (master Allen Ingram).
Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 40 tons, 4 men) bound from Roanoke, North Carolina to Boston, Massachusetts, laden with tobacco; taken on 14 March 1778 off Montoch [Montauk] Point, Long Island, New York by HMS Ariel (John Becher commanding), and brought into New York.
Intended voyage: within the United States.
Court papers numbered CP 1-3-
- [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master William Wallis or Wallace, midshipman, 15 April 1778;
- [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Becher v The schooner Chelsey and her cargo, 15 April 1778;
- [CP 3]: deposition of Allen Ingram, 21 April 1778.
Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-3:-
- SP 1: invoice for tobacco on account of Messrs Trumbull, Wadsworth and Huntington, of Connecticut;
- SP 2: clearance from Connecticut;
- SP 3: clearance from Roanoke.
