Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Chasseur of La Rochelle (master Jean Robin).

Capture history: a French merchant ship (230 tons, 4 guns, 18 men, formerly the British ship Hunter, taken on a voyage from England to Russia by American privateers and sold to the French), now bound from La Rochelle, laden with military stores, salt and dry goods [to the Americas]; retaken on 15 July 1779 by the loyalist privateer Speedwell (Robert Casson commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from France to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master George Oliver, lieutenant, 28 August 1779;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Casson v The Chasseur and her cargo, 28 August 1779;
  • [CP 3]: monition, 28 August 1779;
  • [CP 4]: answer and claim of VIncent Pearse Ashfield on behalf of John Bell of Yarmouth, England, owner of the Hunter, 8 September 1779;
  • [CP 5]: replication.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by [10] September 1779].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-16:-

  • SP 1: official ship's paper;
  • SP 2: crew list and agreement, 16 March 1779;
  • SP 3: muster roll, 1778-1779;
  • SP 4-SP 7: ship's business papers;
  • SP 8-SP 12: bills of lading;
  • SP 13-SP 15: master's papers, November-December 1778;
  • SP 16: wrapper comprising a full printed page of the Supplement to the Royal Gazette,4 August 1779, marked Le Chausser's papers.
