British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.
Captured ship: Le Chasseur (master Thomas Liman).
Capture history: a French merchant ship (brigantine, 150 tons, 15 or 16 crew and 2 passengers (Etienne Girau and Joseph Bilat), bound from Marseilles, via Cadiz, to the Mississippi, laden with soap, candles, oil, cheese, wine, dry goods, flour and hardware; taken on 16 September 1778 in latitude 37°21'N, longitude 74°W by HMS Maidstone (Alan Gardner commanding) and HMS Emerald (Benjamin Caldwell commanding), and brought into New York.
Intended voyage: from France to Spanish Louisiana.
