Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Charming Sally of New Haven, Connecticut (commander Francis Brown).

Capture history: an American privateer (sloop, 116 tons, 56 men and boys) bound from [New] Bedford, Massachusetts on a cruise; taken on 16 January 1777 in latitude 44°59'N by HMS Nonsuch (Walter Griffith commanding), and brought into Plymouth, Devon.

Intended voyage: a cruise from the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: depositions of Francis Brown of New Have, Benjamin Powers surgeon of New Hampshire, and William Lack seaman of New York, commissioners' affidavit, taken at Plymouth, 27 January 1777;
  • [CP 2]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-4) brought in by the prize master William Delap, master's mate of HMS Nonsuch, 4 February 1777;
  • [CP 3]: allegation, 22 March 1777.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 3-4:-

  • SP 1-SP 2: [both wanting, but probably the privateer commission and printed instructions of Congress];
  • SP 3: owner's instructions, of Samuel Broome, Bedford in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, 20 November 1776: to cruise off Cape Finisterre, and then go into Bordeaux to deliver your letters, and to get assistance from Messrs Delap there;
  • SP 4: letter from Samuel Broome & Co to Messrs Samuel and J H Delap, Bordeaux, 6 November 1776: claims recommendation from Silas Deane, in Paris, and asks for help in purchasing guns.
