Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Canister (master John Folger).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 35 tons, 7 men) bound from Dumfries, Virginia to St Malo, laden with tobacco; taken on 28 November 1778 in latitude 46°45'N, longitude 16°56'W by the privateer Bellona (Patrick Fairweather commanding), and brought into Liverpool.

Intended voyage: from the United States to France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: attestations at to papers (numbered 1-9) brought in by the prize master Richard Morrison mate, taken at Liverpool, 29 December 1778;
  • [CP 2-CP 3]: two depositions of Joachin Reallon of St Jean de Luz, mate, and Pierre Gottier labourer of Merianac, near Bordeaux, taken at Liverpool, 30-31 December 1778;
  • [CP 4]: translations of ship's papers, January 1779.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-9 (Virginia papers):-

  • SP 1: owner's instructions of Richard Graham, Dumfries (one of six owners named in SP 2) to Folger, to to join Michel's convoy, 22 October 1778;
  • SP 2: ship's pass;
  • SP 3: facture in French for tobacco, signed J Michel;
  • SP 4: manuscript bill of lading in French, signed by Folger;
  • SP 5: bond, Port South, Potowmack [Potomac], 21 October 1778;
  • SP 6: bill of health, Port South, Potowmack, 21 October 1778;
  • SP 7: permit to take on stores;
  • SP 8: translation of SP 4 , for Folger;
  • SP 9: business/personal letter in French (no envelope) from J Michel, Ste Marie Riviere, Potomack, 20 October 1778, to J B Dubuat, St Malo, 'mon bon amy et frere'.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-20; Ship's papers: 21-29 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
