Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Bridget or Brigitte (master Christopher Bassett).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 100 tons, 8 men) bound from Grenada to Virginia, laden with rum; taken on 9 November 1782 in latitude 36°40'N, longitude 74°W by the loyalist privateer Surprize (John Hall commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Hall v The brigantine Bridget, 16 November 1782;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Isaiah Vallan, 16 November 1782;
  • [CP 3]: account of sale of the brigantine, net proceeeds £212 14s, 19 December 1782

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-8 :-

  • SP 1-SP 3: official ships papers from Grenada, in French;
  • SP 4-SP 8: ship's business papers.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-2; Ship's papers: 3-11 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024. CP 3 added from HCA 49/91].
