Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Black Prince of Dunkirk (commander William Ripner).

Capture history: an American privateer under French colours (70 tons, 12 guns, 66 men), bound from Dunkirk on a cruise; taken on 25 March 1781 about 9 leagues SSW of Ushant, Brittany by HMS Lively (William Carlyon commanding), and HMS Cruiser (Arthur Haynes commanding), and brought into Falmouth.

Intended voyage: a cruise from France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: standing interrogatories;
  • [CP 2]: three depositions of William Ripner (born at New Hartford, Connecticut, resident for seven years in Martinique and Dunkirk and now a French subject), Jean Baptiste Le Seux and Louis Le Breton, and commissioners affidavit, at Falmouth, 30-31 March 1781;
  • [CP 3]: attestation as to papers (no papers) brought in by Henry Creed of London, agent for the captors, 11 October 1782.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-21 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
