British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.
Captured ship: Betsey (master William Thomas).
Capture history: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 140 or 150 tons, 2 guns, 9 men) bound from Salem, Massachusetts to Hispaniola [Saint Domingue], laden with lumber, fish; taken on 7 September 1779 off Cape Ann, Boston Bay, Massachusetts in latitude 42°N, longitude 67°W by HMS Virginia (John Orde commanding), and brought into New York.
Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.
Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-
- [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Orde v The brigantine Betsey, September 1779;
- [CP 2]: deposition of William Thomas, 15 September 1779;
- [CP 3-CP 4]: two affidavits as to papers brought in by the prize master Thomas Mulock, quartermaster, 17 September (the papers were with Ord), and 22 September 1779.
Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-3 (Massachusetts papers):-
- SP 1-SP 2: official ships papers;
- SP 3: invoice from the pwners, John Derby, Richard Manning and William Gray.
[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-4; Ship's papers: 5-7 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
