Captured ship: Betsey (master William Thomas).
Capture history: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 140 or 150 tons, 2 guns, 9 men) bound from Salem, Massachusetts to Hispaniola [Saint Domingue], laden with lumber, fish; taken on 7 September 1779 off Cape Ann, Boston Bay, Massachusetts in latitude 42°N, longitude 67°W by HMS Virginia (John Orde commanding), and brought into New York.
Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.
