Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Betsey (master Thomas Kelly).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 40 tons, 2 guns) bound from New Bern and Edenton, North Carolina to St Eustatius or St Croix, or St Thomas, Danish West Indies, laden with tobacco, naval stores, lumber; taken on 17 June 1779 in latitude 33°30'N, longitude 71°W by the loyalist privateer Bayard (Benedick Bryan commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Obediah Johnson, 30 June 1779;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Bryan v The schooner Betsey, 30 June 1779.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-6 (North Carolina papers):-

  • SP 1: official ship's paper;
  • SP 2-SP 4: ship's business papers, St Eustatius to Edenton, 1778;
  • SP 5 -SP 6: bills of lading.
