Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Betsey (master Thomas Stowe).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 15 men) bound from St Eustatius to South Carolina, laden with rum, gin, sugar, salt, dry goods; taken on 22 July 1778 in latitude 36°N, west of Ocracoke Bar, North Carolina by the loyalist privateer Enterprise (Daniel Squire commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Squire v The sloop Betsey, 5 August 1778;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Thomas Milroy, 12 August 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1:-

  • SP 1: crew list and agreement.
