Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Betsey (master James Richards).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 30 tons, 5 men, formerly a loyalist ship taken on 20 May 1782 by rebels, while anchored in Brookhaven [New York]), now bound from New Haven, Connecticut to Boston, Massachusetts, laden with wheat, rye, indian corn, cheese; taken on 31 October 1782 in the harbour of New Haven by the loyalist privateer Sly (Joseph Easton Trowbridge commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Benjamin Prycott, 9 November 1782;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Trowbridge v The sloop Betsey, 9 November 1782; ;
  • [CP 3-CP 4]: two depositions, of Joseph Easton Trowbridge and Nathaniel Wilmoth, 11-12 November 1782;
  • [CP 5]: answer and claim of John Hallock, for himself and Richard Smith, owners of the loyalist vessel, and the rest of her crew, 25 or 27 November 1782.

  • SP 1-SP 2: official ship's papers;
  • SP 3: details of cargo.
