Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Betsey (master Charles Joynes).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 50 tons, 2 guns, 8 men) bound from Cherry Stone [Cherrystone or Cheriton], Virginia to St Eustatius, laden with tobacco, flour; taken on 15 May 1778 in latitude 36°30'N, longitude 72°30'W off the coast of Virginia by HMS Greyhound (Archibald Dickson commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Edward Muir, mate, 22 May 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Dickson v The sloop Betsey), 22 May 1778
  • [CP 3-CP 4]: two depositions of Ezekiel Hudnall and Severn Small, 22 May 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-5 (Virginia papers):-

  • SP 1-SP 2: official ship's papers;
  • SP 3-SP 5: bills of lading.

Mail in transit, numbered MT 1:-

  • MT 1: business letter to John Ball, St Eustatius from Littleton Savage, Northampton, Virginia, 14 May 1778.
