Captured ship: Betsey (master John Williams).
Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 20 tons) bound from Hampton [Suffolk], Virginia to St Eustatius or Cap François, Saint Domingue; taken on 20 September 1777 in latitude 35°40'N, longitude 74°20'W about 15 leagues S of Cape Henry, Virginia, laden with tobacco, shingles, turpentine by HMS Perseus (George Keith Elphinstone commanding), and brought into New York.
Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.
