Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Betsey (master John Williams).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 20 tons) bound from Hampton [Suffolk], Virginia to St Eustatius or Cap François, Saint Domingue; taken on 20 September 1777 in latitude 35°40'N, longitude 74°20'W about 15 leagues S of Cape Henry, Virginia, laden with tobacco, shingles, turpentine by HMS Perseus (George Keith Elphinstone commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master James Rickie, midshipman, 6 October 1777;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Elphinstone v The sloop Betsey, 8 October 1777;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of John Shelley, 13 October 1777.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-2:-

  • SP 1: invoice;
  • SP 2: bill of lading.
