Captured ship: Betsey (master John Palmer).
History: an American [US] merchant ship (sloop, 100 tons, 7 men), bound from Boston in May 1777 via Charleston to Amsterdam, laden with rum, osnaburghs, lead, iron, nails, rice, indigo; taken on 30 August 1777 in latitude 39°33'N, longitude 52°43'W by HMS Bristol (John Raynor commanding), and brought into [New York].
Previously, Palmer, with a different ship Elizabeth, operating for the Secret Committee of Congress, was bound from Marseilles to New York, laden with linens and woollens for use of the Secret Committee, when taken on 13 December 1776 by the American privateer Eagle (Barzilla Smith commanding), and brought into Boston, to the annoyance of Congress. These papers were retained by Palmer until the capture of the Betsey.
