British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.
Captured ship: Betsey (master Joseph Newman).
Capture history: a an American merchant ship (100 tons) bound from Nevis to Newbury, Massachusetts, laden with rum; taken on 8 October 1782 at Cape Cod by HMS Enterprize [Enterprise] (John Payne commanding), and HMS Chatham (Andrew Snape Douglas commanding), and brought into New York.
Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.
Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-
- [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by Payne, 15 October 1782;
- [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Payne v The Betsey, 15 October 1782;
Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-2:-
- SP 1-SP 2: ship's business papers.
