High Court of Admiralty.
Captured ship: Betsey of Boston (master Jesse Harding).
Capture history: an American merchant ship fitted as a privateer (brigantine, 130 tons, 6 guns, 23 men), bound from Port au Prince, Saint Domingue to Bilbao, laden with sugar, cocoa; taken on [August to September] 1781 at the Western Isles [Azores] by the privateer Enterprize (William Dennis commanding), and brought into Limerick.
Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to Spain.
Court papers: 1-8; Ship's papers and letters etc: 9-54. Includes papers relating to the estates of the Duc de Praslin in Saint Domingue, with lists of 173 named slaves.
About 150 letters were identified as being from this ship, but wrongly placed in HCA 32/276/4 and HCA 32/276/5 in 2021: they have been included in the American War Sorting Exercise to see if more exist, misplaced elsewhere.
[These are interim paper numbers, and are likely to change once more fully catalogued.]
