Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Bedecia or La Bedecie otherwise Betsey (master Pierre Giraud).

Capture history: an American or French merchant ship (50 tons, 7 men) bound from [St Lucia] to a port on the coast of America, laden with rum, sugar, cocoa, coffee, dry goods, gunpowder, arms, cannon; taken on 17 July 1778 at Block Island, Rhode Island by HMS Sphynx [Sphinx] (Alexander Graeme commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Joseph Lancaster, master, 22 October 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Graeme v The Bedecie, 11 September 1778;
  • [CP 3]: answer and claim of Francis Green on behalf of the privateer Tryon (George SIbbles commanding) as being in sight during the capture and therefore due a share of the prize, 16 September 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-4:-

  • SP 1-SP 3: official ship's papers;
  • SP 4: crew list and agreement.
