Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Avanture (master Courronat).

Capture history: a French armed ship sent from the Comte D'Estaing's fleet to take on board sick French soldiers from Charleston (formerly the British storeship Adventure, taken by the French in July 1779 at Grenada), now taken on 11 or 12 May 1780 in Charleston harbour, South Carolina (all her crew being onshore in the fortifications of Charleston) by the fleet under the command of Vice-Admiral Arbuthnot, that is HMS Renown (George Dawson commanding), HMS Romulus (George Gayton commanding), HMS Roebuck (Sir Andrew Snape Hammond commanding), HMS Rainbow (John Kendal commanding), HMS Richmond (Charles Hudson commanding), HMS Raleigh (James Gambier commanding), HMS Blonde (Andrew Barkley commanding), HMS Virginia (John Orde commanding), HMS Perseus (Sir George Keith Elphinstone commanding), HMS Camilla (John Collins commanding), HMS Fowey (John Henry commanding), HMS Bonetta (Ralph Dundas commanding), HMS Loyalist (John Plummer Ardesoif commanding), HMS Sandwich (William Bett commanding), HMS Germaine ([John Mowbray] commanding) and HMS Keppel (John Stute commanding) and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: defence of Charleston.

  • [CP 6-CP 7]: two replications against the answers, 22 July 1780;
  • [CP 8]: deposition of Joseph Gros, officer of marines of the Aventure, 22 July 1780;
  • [CP 9]: rejoinder of James Cruden;
  • [CP 10]: account of the sale of the ship, for £950 13s 10d after cost, 1 November 1780;
  • [CP 11]: record of court process before Robert Bayard, from 26 June 1780 to 17 January 1781;
  • [CP 12-CP 14]: claim of James Cruden for one-half of the proceeds of the sale of the prize, 20 April 1781, with supporting affidavits taken on 2 and 3 June 1780 at Charleston as to her identity as the Adventure;
  • [CP 15]: list of the captors.
