Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Ann (master John Meream).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 30 tons, 5 men) bound from Little Duck Creek Landing, Kent County, Delaware to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, laden with Indian corn, malt, wheat, flax seed and flour; taken on 3 May 1780 at the mouth of Cohansey Creek, New Jersey by the loyalist privateer Restoration (William Milby commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master David Hattridge, 10 May 1780;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Milby v The schooner Ann and her cargo, 10 May 1780;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Richard Wood, mate, 11 May 1780.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-7:-

  • SP 1: small memorandum book, with notes of horses born, trees planted, agreements made etc;
  • SP 2-SP 5: loose memoranda and receipts found inside SP 1;
  • SP 6-SP 7: letters between Joseph Holliday and Falconer & Johnson, merchants of Headchester, about the non-delivery etc of tobacco, October 1779.

Mail in transit, number MT 1-5:

  • MT 1-MT 3: two letters to Miss Peggy Chew, in Philadelphia, from her mother Elizabeth Chew and an un-named sister, dated 1 May 1780, which were noted to be delivered by Daniel Mifflin, who did not appear, and so were sent instead by 'Mr Wiles' [Mr Wild]. He appears to be the writer of the outer cover [MT 3] for the two letters, on the inside of which he addressed the 'most amiable and enchanting Miss Peggy Chew' and recalled memories of their evening of 1 May 1778. [This Mr Wiles or Mr Wild may be a member of the Wild family of Little Duck Creek: he was apparently a passenger to Philadelphia on the Ann];
  • MT 4: letter from John Bell, hatter of Dover to Samuel Farquhar of Philadelphia, asking about his order of hattter's tools, envelope marked 'per Mr Wilds';
  • MT 5: letter from J Stout of Dover to John McSparran of Philadelphia about treatments for tetanus and rabies, with local news; the envelope marked 'Mr Wild'.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-3; Ship's papers: 4-14 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
