Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Americaine (commander Anne François Rene Jourdan).

Capture history: a French privateer (340 tons, 225 men) bound from St Malo on a cruise; taken on 26 January 1781 at the mouth of the Channel by HMS Prudente (William Waldegrave commanding), and brought into Portsmouth.

Intended voyage: a cruise from France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-5), brought in by William Waldegrave, 31 January 1781;
  • [CP 2]: standing interrogatories, printed;
  • [CP 3]: three depositions of Anne Francois Rene Jourdan, Nicholas Julien Le Sallier and Isaac Quesnel, commissioners affidavit, and commissioners letter, 31 January 1781;
  • [CP 4]: translations of the ship paper No 1.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-5:-

  • SP 1: letter of marque;
  • SP 2: muster roll;
  • SP 3: official ransom instruction;
  • SP 4: owners note;
  • SP 5: pass from St Malo to Captain Delamonnerie, 11 January 1781.
