Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Amazon (commander Noah Stoddard).

Capture history: an American privateer (50-60 tons, 8 guns, 37 men) bound on a cruise; taken on 22 April 1780, about 10 leagues from Sandy Hook, New Jersey by HMS Delaware (Christopher Mason commanding), HMS Iris (James Hawker commanding), and HMS Otter (Richard Royal commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: a cruise from the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Mason v The brigantine Amazon, 26 April 1780;
  • [CP 2]: monition, 26 April 1780;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Stoddard, 10 May 1780.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 17 June 1780].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1 (Massachusetts papers):-

  • SP 1: letter of marque.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-2; Ship's papers: 3 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered, with CP 2 added from HCA 32/ in 2024].
