High Court of Admiralty.
Captured ship: Alice formerly Paragon (master John Porter, owners Messrs Blake and Russell of Charleston).
Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 70 tons, 12 men) bound from Charleston, South Carolina to Nantes, laden with indigo and rice; taken on 1 May 1777 in latitude 47°N, longitude 4°W by HMS Foudroyant (John Jervis commanding), and brought into Plymouth.
Intended voyage: from the United States to France.
Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-
- [CP 1]: attestation as to papers [5 papers] brought in by the prize master, Nathaniel Shield, master's mate, 26 May 1777;
- [CP 2]: standing interrogatories [22 questions];
- [CP 3]: additional interrogatories [5 questions, added subsequent to [the Prohibitory Act, 16 Geo III, c5];
- [CP 4]: three depositions of John Vorter of Charleston, Benjamin Barnett of New Providence, Bahamas, and John Winer of Bermuda, and commissioners' affidavit, 26 May 1777;
- [CP 5]: allegation, 28 June 1777.

- SP 2: invoice for rice to be shipped to France by the owners;
- SP 3: letter of instruction to the master from the owners, 25 February 1777;
- SP 4: a long and detailed order for sundry goods to be imported from France, 26 February 1777;
