Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Alexandrine of Martinique (master Jean François Feraud).

Capture history: a French merchant ship (brigantine, 150 tons, 12 men) bound from St Pierre, Martinique to St Pierre et Miquelon, laden with tobacco and other cargo; taken on 3 January 1778 in the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia by HMS Emerald (Benjamin Caldwell commanding) and HMS Richmond (John Lewis Gidoin commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to New France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-CP 3:

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Dort, midshipman, 28 January 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Caldwell v The brigantine Alexandrine and her cargo, 28 January 1778;
  • [CP 3]: affidavit as to the leaky condition of the ship, 28 January 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-SP 5 [all these papers are old: perhaps the more recent ones were thrown overboard]:

  • SP 1: French muster roll of brig Amitie of Martinique (master Jean Francois Feraud) 14 December 1776;
  • SP 2: French ship's pass for Alexandrine, to go from Martinique to St Pierre et Miquelon, and thence to Dunkirk, 8 February 1777;
  • SP 3-SP 5: Virginia bill of health, clearance and ships certificate for the Alexandrine, all Rappahannock, Virginia, 29 May 1777;

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-2; Ship's papers: 3-7 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
