Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Alexandrine of Dunkirk (commander François Hauchecorne).

Capture history: a French privateer (80 tons, 72 men including 6 Americans, formerly the English ship Sea Flower [of Folkestone]), now bound from Dunkirk on a cruise; taken on 18 May 1780 in latitude 57°40'N about 7 leagues off the Ness of Norway by HMS Chatham (William Allen commanding), and brought into Sheerness.

Intended voyage: a cruise from France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: inventory of ship's papers (numbered 1-8) made by William Allen at Orford, Suffolk, 9 June 1780;
  • [CP 2]: attestation as to papers, based on [CP 1], by Oliver Tomlinson, prize agent, 16 June 1780;
  • [CP 3]: translation of ship's papers, 19 June 1780;
  • [CP 4]: two depositions (of Marin Blaizot, Louis Loquet and taken at Sheerness Garrison (reporting that most of the French crew are prisoners of war on the Security prison ship, with some onshore in Rochester hospital), 10-11 July 1780;
  • [CP 5]: allegation, 18 July 1780.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-8:-

  • SP 1: privateer's commission;
  • SP 2: muster roll;
  • SP 3: ransom bill for the English ship Friend's Adventure of Harwich;
  • SP 4: inventory;
  • SP 5: journal of the cruise;
  • SP 6: ransom certificate of John Dean, master of the Friend's Adventure;
  • SP 7: port and starboard watches;
  • SP 8: disposition of combat roles.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-8; Ship's papers: 9-16 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
