Captured ship: Alexander (master Peter Ridge).
Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 20 tons, 7 men) bound from Alexandria, Virginia to Martinique, laden with flour and tobacco; taken in June or July 1777 off Cape Henry, Virginia by HMS Emerald (Benjamin Caldwell commanding) and HMS Thames (Tyringham Howe commanding), and brought into New York.
Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.
