Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Alexander (master Gideon Crawford).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 120 tons, 6 guns, 14 men, formerly a British merchant ship of Ferryland, Newfoundland, taken by Americans), now bound from Boston, Massachusetts to Virginia, laden with salt, porter, linens, rum, and onions; retaken on 4 November 1781 by HMS Amphion (John Bazely commanding), and brought into [New York].

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-CP 4:

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Cocket, midshipman, 5 December 1781;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Bazely v The armed brigantine Alexander and her cargo, 5 December 1781;
  • [CP 3]: answer and claim of Richard Yates merchant of New York on behalf of Gregory Jackson and James Jackson of Newfoundland, owners;
  • [CP 4]: replication.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-SP 4, (Massachusetts papers):

  • SP 1: United States letter of marque, 9 October 1781;
  • SP 2: ship's certificate, with masters 1778-1781;
  • SP 3: certificate of clearance from Boston, with a description of the master and mate, 17 October 1781;
  • SP 4: bill of lading, 18 October 1781.
