Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Aimable Jeanne of Bayonne (master Bernard Lermet).

Capture history: a French merchant ship (goelette, 80 tons, 9 men) bound from Bayonne to St Pierre et Miquelon (but suspected to be for the English colonies in America), laden with salt, cordage, brandy, linen, clothing and drugs; taken on 23 July 1778 in latitude 45°N about 30 leagues from Bayonne or 25 leagues from Bilbao by the privateer Revenge (Thomas Filleul commanding), and brought into Jersey.

Intended voyage: from France to New France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-7) brought in by Laurence Remon, second mate, 1 August 1778;
  • [CP 2]: three depositions taken at Jersey, of Etienne Passement, Bernard Lermet and Jean Aristoy, 1 August 1778;
  • [CP 3]: covering letter from Jersey, 6 August 1778;
  • [CP 4]: translations of some of the ship's papers, 1 September 1778;
  • [CP 5]: allegation, 3 October 1778;

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-18:-

  • SP 1-SP 5: official ship's papers and account of the cargo;
  • SP 6: muster roll;
  • SP 7 and SP 7A: mail-in-transit: a letter to the governor of St Pierre et Miquelon, in an envelope containing a further 11 letters from Bayonne to merchants etc there, now numbered SP 8-SP 18, all written 13-15 July 1778.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-6; Ship's papers: 7-26 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
