Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Aimable Gertrude of Nantes (master Simon Papineau).

Capture history: a French merchant ship (350 tons, 33 men) bound from Cap François, Saint Domingue to Paimboeuf and Nantes, laden with sugar, coffee, indigo, cocoa, cotton, ratafia and some lignum vitae; taken on 20 September 1778 about latitude 48°N by HMS Vengeance (Michael Clements commanding) in sight of the squadron of Admiral Keppel, and brought into Plymouth.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-63) brought in by the prize master Joseph Steere, master's mate, 29 September 1778;
  • [CP 2]: three depositions taken at Plymouth of François Defond, Michel Papin and Jean Marie Guerval (the master Papineau being aboard HMS Vengeance), and commissioners' affidavit, 1 October 1778;
  • [CP 3]: translations of ship's papers, 30 October 1778,
  • [CP 4]: allegation, 4 November 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-63:-

  • SP 1-SP 48: bills of lading;
  • SP 49-SP 50: two certificates for soldiers to return to France;
  • SP 51: death certificate for one of the crew;
  • SP 52-SP 61: official ship's papers;
  • SP 62: muster roll, including the names of several passengers to Saint Domingue on the previous voyage, including enslaved and free black women;
  • SP 63: notebook account of the cargo.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-22; Ship's papers: 23-85 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
