Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Aimable Genevieve of Fécamp (master Jean Baptiste Vincent Jourel).

Capture history: a French merchant ship (100 tons, 7 men) bound from Cadiz to Dunkirk, laden with salt; taken on 9 August 1778 about 6 leagues from Étaples in France by HMS Speedwell sloop (Thomas Bornford Mainwaring commanding), and brought into the Downs.

Intended voyage: from Spain to France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-17) brought in by Mainwaring, 5 September 1778;
  • [CP 2]: three depositions taken at Deal, of Jean Baptiste Vincent Jourel, Jean Noellarey and Jean Noget, and commissioners' affidavit, 7 September 1778;
  • [CP 3]: translations of ships papers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-17:-

  • SP 1: muster roll;
  • SP 2-SP 11: official ship's papers (French and Spanish);
  • SP 12: charter-party, Cadiz, 6 June 1778;
  • SP 13-SP 14: mail in transit;
  • SP 15-SP 17: bills of lading.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-20; Ship's papers: 21-37 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
