Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Aimable Claris of L'Isle aux Moines (master Joseph Kergalant).

Capture history: a French merchant ship (coaster, 45 tons, 6 men) bound from Vannes to Bayonne, laden with salt; taken on 26 September 1778 about 15 leagues from Bordeaux by the privateer Active (Clement Messervy commanding), and brought into Jersey.

Intended voyage: within France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-2) brought in by Messervy, 28 October 1778;
  • [CP 2]: two depositions of Mathurin Le Pan and Joseph Bevin, and commissioners' affidavit, 28 October 1778;
  • [CP 3]: allegation;
  • [CP 4]: translations of the ship's papers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-2:-

  • SP 1: ship's pass;
  • SP 2: pass from Lorient.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-6; Ship's papers: 7-8 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
