Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Aimable Angelique of St Valery sur Somme (master Jacques de Vime).

Capture history: a French coastal vessel (70 tons, 6 men) bound from Marennes to Etaples laden with wine, salt and casks of vinegar, taken on 14 August 1778 by the privateer Bazely (Noah Gautier commanding) before the date of her letter of marque, and brought into Jersey.

Intended voyage: within France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: three depositions of Jacques de Vime, Jacques de Vime junior, Jean Baptiste de Cas, and commissioners' affidavit, 12 September 1778;
  • [CP 2]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-9), brought in by Gautier, 16 September 1778;
  • [CP 3]: allegation by the captor;
  • [CP 4]: allegation by the Procurator General that the captor had no valid letter of marque, and that the prize ought to be confiscated and treated as droits of the Admiralty, 23 November 1778;
  • [CP 5]: translations of some of the ship's papers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-9:-

  • SP 1: muster roll;
  • SP 2-SP 5: official ship's papers, including charterparty by E Du Bourg;
  • SP 6 -SP 7: business letters to the master by Friseout of Etaples;
  • SP 8: bill of lading;
  • SP 9: note from Du Bourg.
