Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Aigle (commander LeMoyne de Preneuf).

Capture history: a French naval ship (corvette, 300 tons, 136 crew, 1 passenger, formerly the English East India Company packet boat Eagle Packet taken in 1779 in the chops of the Channel by a joint French and Spanish fleet), now bound from Cap François, Saint Domingue to the Chesapeake in search of Admiral Vaudreuil's squadron; taken in fight on 19 August 1782 off Cape Henry, Virginia by HMS Duc de Chartres (John Child Purvis commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Purvis v The ship L'Aigle, 28 August 1782;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Lieutenant John Pittman, 29 August 1782;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Meurille or Merurille Ferraru, secretary of L'Aigle;
  • [CP 4]: answer and claim of James Lodge of New York, employee of the East India Company, 25 September 1782;
  • [CP 5]: replication.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-99:-

  • SP 1: commission of LeMoyne de Preneuf as Lieutenant de Fregate, 6 June 1778;
  • SP 2: inventory of boats [?], 27 September 1780;
  • SP 3-SP 99: the personal archive of LeMoyne Preneuf, including letters, military orders, reports of fights and other documents arranged by date, 16 May 1778-5 August 1782, from Senegal, the French Caribbean, and France.
