Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Aigle (master Jacques Vincent Rosbo de Kerlero).

Capture history: a French merchant ship in the service of the king, with a letter of marque (350 tons, 6 guns, 36 men, 69 soldiers and 1 passenger) bound from Lorient to the Isle de France [Mauritius], laden with bomb shells, cannon balls, anchors, cordage, sail cloth, wine, brandy, staves, match, flour, soap and tin plate; taken on 16 February 1782 in latitude 42°15'N by HMS La Prudente (Lord Charles Fitzgerald commanding), and HMS Monsieur (Seymour Finch commanding), and brought into Portsmouth, but the master and others taken into Falmouth.

Intended voyage: from France to the Indian Ocean.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: three depositions of Jacques Rosbo, Alexandre Thevenard de Surville and Gabriel Duas, taken at Falmouth, and commissioners' affidavit, 8-11 March 1782, mentioning the letter of marque;
  • [CP 2]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-5) brought in to Portsmouth by Thomas Peyton, first lieutenant of La Prudente, 26 March 1782;
  • [CP 3]: translation of 2 of the ship's papers (now SP 1 and SP 2).

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-5:-

  • SP 1: muster roll, listing crew, the passenger M Bourelly, lieutenant of the Regiment de Pondichery, and the soldiers;
  • SP 2: detailed invoice/receipt of ammunition, provisions and other effects, for the Intendants of Mauritius;
  • SP 3: muster roll of the detachment of the Regiment de Vexin embarked on L'Aigle;
  • SP 4: substitution of a soldier;
  • SP 5: list of 10 boys being sent to Mauritius [on indentures?].
  • SP 6: letter of marque or privateer's commission.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-23; Ship's papers: 24-29 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
