Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Adventure Schooner (master William Young).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 100 tons, 7 men) bound from St Croix, Danish West Indies, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, laden with salt, rum and tea; taken on 14 March 1777 off the Capes of Delaware by HMS Daphne (St John Chinnery commanding) and HMS Preston (Samuel Uppleby commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: schedule of 10 papers found on the prize [these numbers have not been used];
  • [CP 2]: libel in Chinnery v The schooner Adventure and her cargo, 6 October 1777;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of William Young, an Irish subject of King George III, 17 January 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-8 (Philadelphia papers):-

  • SP 1: crew list and agreement;
  • SP 2-SP 4: official ship's papers;
  • SP 5: master's memorandum of goods he was commissioned to bring from the West Indies.

Mail in Transit numbered MT 1- 3:-

  • MT 1, MT 1A and MT 1B: letter from Joseph Fisher, St Croix, to William Pollard, Philadelphia, enclosing invoice and bill of lading, 14 January 1777;
  • MT 2, MT 2A and MT 2B: letter from Joseph Fisher, St Croix, to his father Samuel Fisher, Philadelphia, enclosing invoice and bill of lading, 14 January 1777;
  • MT 3 and MT 3A: letter from Joseph Fisher, St Croix, to his uncle Benjamin Fuller, Philadelphia, enclosing a bill of lading, 14 January 1777.
