Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Adventure (master Sprowell Merchant).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 80 tons, 7 men, formerly a British ship taken by Americans and condemned in South Carolina in 1777) now bound from Dartmouth, Massachusetts to Charleston, South Carolina, in ballast; taken on 9 October 1777 off Nantucket, by the Lady Parker, a tender belonging to HMS Chatham (Tobias Caulfield commanding), and brought into Rhode Island.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-2), brought in by George Murray midshipman and deposition by him and John Read prize agent for HMS Chatham, that as there was no prize court at Rhode Island, American prisoners were required to be exchanged for British prisoners of war as soon as possible, and so there are no crew to depose; release by Murray; further deposition of Murray; commissioners' affidavit at Portsmouth, further attestation of papers, all 30 November-1 December 1778;
  • [CP 2]: allegation, 8 January 1779.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-2:-

  • SP 1: ship's certificate, South Carolina, 14 August 1777;
  • SP 2: ship's certificate, Massachusetts Bay.
