Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Adventurer (master John Magee).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 100 tons, 10 men) bound from the Toms River, Burlington, New Jersey to Bordeaux, laden with tobacco; taken on 5 April 1778 in latitude 44°20'N, longitude 7°W by the privateer Hero (William Scott commanding), and brought into Guernsey.

Intended voyage: from the United States to France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-4) brought in by Scott, 5 May 1778;
  • [CP 2]: three depositions of John Magee, Gilbert Sherer and John Carll or Carrol (includes answers to two special interrogatories), commissioners' affidavit, and a letter explaining that as there was no prison appointed for prisoners of war, the three deponents had escaped by boat before signing their depositions, 5-9 May 1778;
  • [CP 3]: allegation, 16 June 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-4 (New Jersey papers):-

  • SP 1-SP 2: official ship's papers;
  • SP 3: bill of lading;
  • SP 4: crew list.
