Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Adventure (commander James Morris).

Capture history: an American privateer (brigantine, 140 tons, 14 guns, 40 men) bound on a cruise; taken on 7 November 1780 in latitude 39°39'N, longitude 66°42'W by HMS America (Samuel Thompson commanding), and HMS Prudent (Thomas Burnet commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: a cruise from the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Callowhill, third lieutenant, 22 November 1780;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Thompson v The privateer Adventure, 22 November 1780;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of William Russell, 24 November 1780.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-2:-

  • SP 1: instructions of Congress to privateers;
  • SP 2: privateer commission, 19 September 1780.
