Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Adventure (master John Vesey).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 100 tons, 13 men) bound from North Carolina to St Eustatius, laden with tobacco, flour, hams and lumber; taken off"Conacoch Bay" near North Carolina [Occohannock, Virginia ?] in latitude 35°N, longitude 75°W on 23 June 1778 by the loyalist privateer Enterprize (Daniel Squire commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Squire v The sloop Adventure and her cargo, 15 July 1778;
  • [CP 2]: deposition of Josiah Ware, 20 July 1778;
  • [CP 3]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Ashburn, 20 July 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-4:-

  • SP 1-SP 3: ship's business papers;
  • SP 4: letter from Robert Fairchild of North Carolina to Messrs Thomas Wallace, St Eustatius, 30 May 1778.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-3; Ship's papers: 4-7 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
