Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Adventure (master Robert Richardson).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 35 tons, 7 men) bound from Talbot County, Maryland to St Eustatius, laden with tobacco and flour; taken off the Capes of Virginia on 28 March 1778 by HMS Preston (Samuel Uppleby commanding), and brought into [New York].

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Christopher Hele, mate, 4 April 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Uppleby v The sloop Adventure and her cargo;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Woolman Gibson, 16 April 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-10 (Maryland papers):-

  • SP 1: crew list and agreement;
  • SP 2-SP 10: ship's business papers.
