Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Adriana (master Robert Alcorn).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 40 tons, 15 men, 7 passengers) bound from St Thomas, Danish West Indies to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, laden with rum and dry goods; taken on 3 May 1782 off the Delaware by HMS Amphitrite (Robert Biggs commanding) and HMS Amphion (John Bazeley commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.

Court Papers, numbered CP 1- 4:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Robert Biggs v The brigantine Adriana and her cargo, 8 May 1782;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Thomas Gibbon Shaw, midshipman of HMS Amphion, 8 May 1782;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of John Sword, 9 May 1782;
  • [CP 4]: monition, 8 May 1782.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 28 May 1782]

  • SP 1: ship certificate, issued by the State of Pennsylvania, 19 July 1781;
  • SP 2: voyage certificate, issued by the State of Pennsylvania, 23 January 1782;
  • SP 3: customs receipt from St Thomas, Danish West Indies, 12 April 1782.
