Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Adrian of Philadelphia (master George Kelley).

Capture history: an American [or French] merchant ship (brigantine, 50 tons, 6 men) bound from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the West Indies or Lorient, France, laden with flour, tobacco, staves; taken on 4 July 1776 at Cape Henlopen, Delaware by HMS Orpheus (Charles Hudson commanding) and HMS Kingfisher (Alexander Graeme commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court Papers, numbered CP 1- 2:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Hay, master's mate of HMS Orpheus, 8 December 1777;
  • [CP 2]: libel in The Advocate General on the relation of Charles Hudson v The brig Adrian and her cargo, 10 December 1777.

[Decision: probably condemned]

Ships Papers, numbered SP 1-5 (Pennsylvania papers):-

  • SP 1: ships certificate, issued 1773;
  • SP 2: crew list and agreement, 30 May 1776;
  • SP 3-SP 4: receipts;
  • SP 5: pass.
