Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Adelaide of Bordeaux formerly La Nerée (master Jean Nicolle).

Capture history: a French merchant ship (400 tons, 31 men) bound from St Pierre, Martinique to Bordeaux, laden with sugar, cotton, coffee; taken on 30 June 1778 in latitude 46°25'N, longitude 11°W of Paris by HMS Proserpine (Evelyn Sutton commanding), and brought into Plymouth.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-88) brought in by the prize master Farquharson McIntosh, master's mate, 28 September 1778;
  • [CP 2]: three depositions of Jean Nicolle, François Novel and Jean Devolve Montaure, and commissioners' affidavit, 28-29 September 1778;
  • [CP 3]: allegation
  • [CP 4]: translations of several of the ship's papers, with translation No 1 here being SP 28, number 2 being SP 44, and the rest of the numbers matching the SP numbers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-88:-

  • SP 1-SP 26: mail in transit - personal and business letters from Martinique (6 and 10 from Grenada), with many to André Beaubeur merchant of Bordeaux; also burial and death certificates;
  • SP 27-SP 45: official ship's papers etc;
  • SP 46-SP 87: bills of lading;
  • SP 88: muster roll.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-22; Ship's papers: 23-111 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
