Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Adams of Marseilles formerly Jean Baptiste of Marseilles (master Pierre Charabot).

Capture history: a French merchant ship (snow, 88 or 145 tons, 10 men, 2 passengers) bound from Bordeaux to the islands of St Pierre et Miquelon, laden with salt and bale goods; taken on 18 July 1778 about 50 or 60 leagues off Madeira by the privateer Alarm (William Richardson commanding), and brought into Guernsey.

Intended voyage: from France to New France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-21) brought in by the prize master Lieutenant Henry Townsend, 17 August 1778;
  • [CP 2]: two depositions of Pierre Charabot and François Charles Dubreuil, and commissioners' affidavit, 17 August 1778;

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-21:-

  • SP 1-21: official ship's papers, trading papers, master's papers;
  • SP 15: letter to Dubreuil, second captain.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-13; Ship's papers: 14-35 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
