Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: L'Actif of Dunkirk (commander John Chitty, an American).

Capture history: a French privateer (cutter, 230 tons, 20 guns, 123 men) bound from Dunkirk on a cruise; taken on 23 April 1782 between Beachy Head and the Isle of Wight by HMS Buffalo (George Robertson commanding), in sight of HMS Bienfaisant, HMS Crocodile, HMS Scourge and HMS Helena, and brought into the Downs.

Intended voyage: a cruise from France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-3) brought in by George Robertson, 25 April 1782;
  • [CP 2]: standing interrogatories;
  • [CP 3]: three depositions taken at Deal, of John Chitty born in Salem, New England, James Smith born in Long Island, [New York] and Thomas Roger of New Brisac, Alsace, and commissioners' affidavit, 26 April 1782;
  • [CP 4]: translations of ship's papers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-3 (French papers):-

  • SP 1: privateer's commission;
  • SP 2: muster roll;
  • SP 3: journal, from 15-21 April 1782, in English.
