Description

Prisoner name: William Waddington.

Prisoner occupation: Outdoor apprentice to Thomas Withers (nurseryman and seedsman).

Court and date of trial: Newark-upon-Trent Borough Sessions [Nottinghamshire] 12 April 1828.

Crime: Stealing peas, about two bushels of marrow-peas and some mangel-wurzels from Thomas Withers (his master) on 6 April 1828.

Initial sentence: Six months imprisonment and once to be privately whipped.

Annotated: 'Nil May 16 1828'.

Petitioner(s): 276 inhabitants of Newark-upon-Trent (convict's borough). Letter from B J Johnson to J Tollemache MP pleading the convict's case. John Waddington (father).

Grounds for clemency: Not guilty by virtue of mistaken identity; witnesses not credible; previous good character.

Other papers: Letter from John Waddington enclosing his own petition.
