Prisoner occupation: Butcher, of Lavenham [Suffolk].
Court and date of trial: Suffolk Easter Sessions, Bury St Edmonds, 22 April 1828.
Crime: Riot and assault upon John Darkins (head gamekeeper to Sir Felix Agar) and three fellow keepers at Lavenham (two indictments).
Initial sentence: 12 months imprisonment and to find sureties to keep the peace for 12 months.
Annotated: 'Nil May 26 1828'.
Petitioner(s): John Suckermore (the convict).
Grounds for clemency: Although present he did not take part in the crime; Sir Felix Agar (prosecutor's employer) repeatedly conversed with the trial judge during the trial; the trial judge was a committee member of the Society for the Protection of Game and was therefore biased.
Additional Information: Tried on the first indictment with Marshall Matthews, Thomas Parmenter and William Spite; Matthews and Parmenter received the same sentence as Suckermore and Spite was acquitted; Suckermore was tried with five others [unnamed] on the second indictment and acquitted.
